Caring for the Community

  • The Sha Tin District Social Welfare Office (District Social Welfare Office) organised a diverse range of activities under the theme of “Walking Together, Embracing Sha Tin” to affirm and promote the spirit of neighbourly assistance, and to address the mental distress brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, partnered with welfare service units in the district to organise mental health promotion activities for residents in several public housing estates (PHE).  The District Social Welfare Office also continued its collaboration with welfare service units serving Chun Yeung Estate to enhance neighbourhood support network for residents of new PHE. 

Enhancing Family Functioning and Embracing Social Inclusion

  • The District Social Welfare Office coordinated with welfare service units in the district to support families in need and promote child protection.  To support the parents with children who have special educational needs (SEN) and frontline workers concerned, the District Social Welfare Office advocated resource sharing, such as developed a parent learning package and professional training, which also aimed at enhancing stress management and parenting skills of the parents/grandparents.  Besides, neighbourly assistance was promoted through the Caring Family Ambassador Scheme and voluntary tutorial service for underprivileged students.  To address local stakeholders’ concern on handling of suspected child maltreatment cases, a professional workshop was conducted to increase stakeholders’ understanding of child protection procedures and strategies and to promote service collaboration.

Care for the Elderly, the Disabled and Their Carers and Intergenerational Inclusion

  • The District Social Welfare Office organised the “Sha Tin District Commendation Scheme for Carers of the Elderly cum Evergreen Games Day” to acknowledge the contributions of elderly carers, raise community awareness of caring to them, as well as to promote positive and healthy images of the elderly and foster intergenerational harmony. Residential care services and related community resources were introduced to parents of students with disabilities in form of online virtual tours through collaboration with rehabilitation service units, enabling them to plan for their children’s long-term care after their graduation well in advance. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of HKSAR and promote care and social inclusion, the District Social Welfare Office co-organised the “One and All Sha Tin Family Fun Fair” with 16 local welfare service units for different target groups and carers to join and showcase their talents. 

Nuturing Positive Development, Promoting Care and Inclusion

  • To tackle youth suicide and mental health concerns, the District Social Welfare Office partnered with District School Development Section of the Education Bureau to organise professional training workshops to deepen the understanding and sensitivity of frontline workers towards youth mental health issues, with an aim to enhance their capabilities to provide timely intervention and support for the children and young people in need. centred onMoreover, a job shadowing programme was organised continuously for young people, helping them to know more about the prospects in the development of elderly and rehabilitation care service industry.
