District Highlights 2022-23

Strengthening District Collaboration for Supporting Community Integration of Residents of New Public Housing Estates

  • Upon the completion of the 2 new public rental housing estates, Ching Tin Estate and Wo Tin Estate, in the district in 2022-23, the Integrated Family Service Centres, in collaboration with service teams for the new housing estates, government departments, and NGOs, has been implementing the “Home Sweet Home @ Ching Tin Wo Tin” project.  The objective of this project is to promote social services and gain an understanding of the service needs of the new estate residents through street stations and service needs surveys, with the goal of supporting and assisting them in adapting to and integrating into the community as quickly as possible.

Promoting Young People’s Mental Health

  • The Tuen Mun District Local Committee on Services for Young People launched the “Tuen Mun Youth Mental Health Platform” (the Platform) in December 2022.  It aims to provide local stakeholders, social workers, teachers, etc., with quick and easy access to a variety of mental health information and services for young people, with the goal of facilitating the promotion of mental wellness among young people in the community.

Promoting Mutual Care and Social Inclusion in the Community

  • In 2022-23, 2 working groups, namely the Working Group on Supporting the Carers and Working Group on Promotion of Social Inclusion, were established under the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Rehabilitation Services to take up the promotion of mental wellness and social inclusion in the district.  To provide support for carers and families of persons with disabilities (PWDs), the Working Group on Supporting the Carers collaborated with the Mobile Van for Publicity Service on Mental Wellness and various rehabilitation service units in the district to set up street stations in public housing estates in Tuen Mun to promote their services under the theme of “Take a Short Break for Yourself!”.  These street stations disseminated information about various services and community resources to enhance the public’s understanding of rehabilitation services in the community and improve their mental wellness.  The programme also aimed to identify hidden families and carers and provide them with appropriate assistance.
  • To foster social inclusion in the community, the Working Group on Promotion of Social Inclusion produced 5 short videos from the perspective of PWDs, their carers and the general public, with a view to highlighting the talents of PWDs and recognising the contributions of their carers.

Strengthening Support For Elders And Promoting Age-Friendliness

  • In 2022-23, 2 working groups, namely the Working Group on Living Well with Good Mental Health and Working Group on Caring for Our Elderly Carers in Tuen Mun, were established under the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Elderly Services to address the needs of individuals in their third age and carers of the elderly.  The Working Group on Living Well with Good Mental Health recruited and trained young-olds as volunteers.  They were tasked with promoting mental health and providing support to elderly individuals in need through community services programmes including visits to the elderly individuals and carers in need, and sending out weekly positive messages through WhatsApp groups to elderly individuals and their carers in the district.
  • Moreover, to enhance support for carers of elderly persons, the Working Group on Caring for Our Elderly Carers in Tuen Mun organised a series of activities aimed at promoting gerontechnology, dementia-friendly messages and a positive and proactive attitude towards life.  Activities carried out under the “Caring for the Elderly in Neighbourhood” project included organising dementia-friendly sharing sessions, publishing the Tuen Mun District Community Support for Elders with Dementia and Their Carers booklet, co-organising service promotion street stations, conducting online seminars for carers of elderly individuals, etc.  Various relaxation and stress-relief activities were organised as part of the “Caring for the Elderly with Friends” project, including stress-relieving diets, seminars on the use of Chinese medicine to improve sleep quality, and DIY workshops for making fragrant sachets, etc.  These activities were held to address the physical and psychological needs of carers.  To promote the use of gerontech products and alleviate carers’ stress, the “Caring for the Elderly with Gerontechnology” project arranged visits to the Gerontech & Innovation Expo cum Summit 2022 and conducted online sharing sessions on the application of gerontech products for carers of elderly persons in Tuen Mun.
