Strengthening Support for Elders and Promoting Age-Friendliness

The Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Elderly Services has all along been co-ordinating with different community stakeholders to address the needs of elders in different stages of life and has set up 2 working groups to implement a series of supporting work. In 2019-20, the “Working Group on Promotion of the Well-being of Third Age Citizens” actively promoted services for young elders and launched a promotion programme for third age citizens. An animation trailer with meaningful life stories of young elders in Tuen Mun district was produced to promote the spirit of active ageing and foster the positive and proactive life attitude of retirees to the community. In addition, the “Working Group on Dementia Friendly and Carer Support” has been actively echoing the “Dementia Friendly Community Campaign” and the “Support for Carers” Project to promote a dementia friendly community for frail elderly persons and their carers. In 2019-20, district-based “Dementia Friends Information Session cum Concern Visit” was conducted, aiming at encouraging the public to register as “Dementia Friends”, as well as enhancing care and support for elderly persons with dementia and their families at community level. The Working Group also published a booklet promoting carers’ services and support information in the district to strengthen and provide appropriate care and support when members of the local community encountered needy elderly persons or their carers.

Enhancing Young People's Understanding of Rehabilitaiton Services and Promoting Social Inclusion in the Community

  • The “Working Group on Promotion of Rehabilitation Services” under the Tuen Mun District Co-ordinating Committee on Rehabilitation Services co-ordinated with different local organisations in the district to implement cross-sector activities, with a view to enhancing public understanding of rehabilitation services and promoting social inclusion in the community. The Working Group also collaborated with the Career Guidance Section of the Education Bureau to organise the “Rehabilitation Work Experience Programme” in 2019-20, which provided work experience opportunities for 68 secondary students to understand rehabilitation services, relevant work conditions and job opportunities. It was hoped that they could develop their interest in rehabilitation services and join the field in future. The programme gained very favourable feedback. While the staff of the rehabilitation units regarded the students industrious, devoted and active, the students also reported to have a better understanding of the rehabilitation services as well as the persons with disabilities (PwDs).
  • To further promote the message of disability inclusion in Tuen Mun district, the Working Group organised “The Joint Rehabilitation Service Units Open Day” in 2019-20 to invite local rehabilitation service units to open their units to the public such that members of the public could learn more about rehabilitation services and the talents of PwDs, thereby enhancing the public’s acceptance of PwDs. During the open day, a wide range of diversified activities, including exhibitions, performances, games and workshops, etc., were organised to facilitate mutual interaction and exchange between the public and PwDs so as to foster disability inclusion
