Introduction
The Social Welfare Department (SWD) has commissioned the Hong Kong Alzheimer's Disease Association (HKADA) to conduct "Dementia Friends" information sessions in the territory under the Dementia Friendly Community Campaign (Campaign), to promote public awareness of dementia as well as encourage care and support for persons with dementia and their carers, with a view to building a dementia friendly community in Hong Kong.
In echoing the "Dementia Friends" campaign initiated by the Alzheimer's Society UK, the HKADA joined the global movement in 2017 to encourage all walks of life in Hong Kong to become Dementia Friends, aiming to raise public awareness of dementia, to correct people's misconceptions of the disease and to tackle stigma associated with it. Different countries/cities around the world have already joined this global movement, with over 18 million Dementia Friends registered all over the world. The SWD aims to enhance the public's understanding of dementia and promote care about persons with dementia and their carers through the central and 11 district-based "Dementia Friends" information sessions. Participants can register as "Dementia Friends" upon completion of the sessions to actively support the Campaign.
